MY STORY

Blog Post 1 – My Story

Many of you may have come across my page via Instagram. My Instagram account was the very start of my journey to health. I started it to hold myself accountable while I tried this “Keto Diet”.

I weighed in at 105kgs (231lbs). I was unhappy, unhealthy and in a terrible space mentally. I had just gotten out of an abusive relationship and part of the reason for my weight and health being so terrible was emotional eating.

When my daughter was 4 months old, I decided enough was enough. I wanted to be able to play and run with her as she got older, and I wanted more than anything to be a good example to her. I committed to posting my meals every day for 365 days to my newly created Instagram account @kimsketo365 and that is where this life changing journey began.

You may think from looking at my page that I was super strict and that’s how I came to lose 45kgs (99lbs) in just over a year. But in fact, I fell off the wagon many times in the beginning. I think that is one of the biggest lessons I learnt is that you don’t have to be perfect to make progress.

When you go off plan you just dust yourself off and make the next meal a keto one. That’s the difference between a diet that has an expiry date and long-term lifestyle changes. I quickly realised that one slice of cake didn’t mean I needed to throw in the towel for the day or even worse, start again on Monday. I also learnt to be kind to myself. Processed foods are designed to be addictive so it’s no wonder we struggle to give them up.

The more I researched on my journey the more I became fascinated with nutrition and so I decided to study and do my Diploma in nutrition. Never did I think I would end up falling in love with it so much that it would become my career.

I joined coaching with Ben Azadi, author of Keto Flex and founder of The Keto Kamp Academy around 10 months into my journey. Ben has taught me so much about keto, carb cycling, carnivore and so much more and I am so grateful to him. Like Ben, I really want to help others get healthy like I have.

I’ve had many personal ups and downs through my journey including being retrenched after 10 years with the same company. I could have used as excuses to give up but instead I focused on my lifestyle choices as the one thing I could control and that’s why I can say even aside from the many health benefits I’ve experienced; Keto completely changed my life.

I’ve been able to reverse my insulin resistance, lose and keep off the weight, and so many non-scale victories I’ve lost count. I’ll never tell you this journey will be easy because not every day will be, but I can tell you it will be worth it.
